Yes Spice, There Really Is A Santa Claus - Monday, December 13, 2010

Please dont let the title of this piece fool you because no, I did not win the Megamillions Powerball Lotto, nor did I convince Ronnie Spector to regroup the Ronettes and climb back up the charts where they still belong (!!!), nor did anyone FINALLY find a cure for AIDS, though there isn't a day or night that goes by that I dont pray to God the Father, God the Mother, Azna, God the Son, Jesus Christ, God the Daughter, Lilith (no, not the evil one, the good one...you dont know? Well remind me to write about her sometime...) and God the Holy Spirit, for that to come true. They're getting closer every day to finding a cure and I dilligently pray they find it soon. Yes, I am gonna write about Santa Claus but not because I do or do not believe in him but since it is the holiday season, I sorta have a question about that particular gentleman. I'm curious about something and perhaps some of you out there might be able to help me answer the following question - could someone please remind me, what are the reasons again for why it is sucha a horrible, despicable act to believe in Santa Claus?

No, it's not the Crixivan nor the Atripla that is speaking, just hear me out. Why is is that everyone is so down on anyone who believes in Santa Claus? Seriously, I really wanna know why because I just dont get it. Unless people are using the concept of Santa Claus for negative connotations, such as manipulating their children into believing they wont get this or that for Christmas if they dont do this-or-that, or using his image to further promote the overcomercialization of the retail world during the holiday shopping season, will someone please take a moment to remind me why it is so utterly disparaging to believe in Santa Claus? There's one of the kickers of this subject. With the exception of the two examples I just listed, guess what? There isn't one single negative thing that Santa Claus represents, nor is there one single negative thing anyone can say about him. With that being said, why then is it so damn important to not believe in Santa Claus? After all, the guy represents being kind to others; the real reason behind the spirit of giving, which in case you didnt know is doing so because it makes one feel good to bring joy to others; and, something that people everywhere, but especially we members of the GLBTQ communities, crave so damn much - unconditional acceptance. Actually, there are probaly a 101 nice, positive things that can be said about good ole' St. Nick but the few I listed are sufficient enough to give everyone a general idea of what he's suppose to be like personality-wise.

So with all this being said, again, why is it so damn horrible to believe in someone who is sucha positive inspiration to the entire world, someone such as Santa Claus? Because he's not real, he doesnt exist? Hmm, it seems to me that nowadays if you wanna believe in anything or anyone who is good, you have to have something called "faith" correct? I've never claimed to have all the answers to all the paradoxes of the universe but one would think that it stands to reason that since it's not preposterous to have faith in yourself, to have faith in your loved ones and to have faith in the spiritual and/or religious side of things, it shouldnt be preposterous to have faith in someone like Santa Claus. I mean, when you really really think about it, if you're not harming yourself or others by believing in Santa Claus, what again is the downside in doing so?

As we all probaly already know, the only people who are really, truly against Santa Claus would be the organized religions of the world. After all, why should everyone at Christmas-time be putting money in the pockets of those damn Santa peddlers when they could be lining the coffers of their local church? Plus, Santa is evil and anyone who believes in him is evil, because people should believe in God and God only. It's very dangerous when Bible-thumpers say stuff like that because it exposes their hypocrisy in two distinct ways. First, I really dont think someone like God would feel too comfortable with His/Her own followers putting Him/Her into a popularity contest with Santa Claus, would you? After all, if Santa Claus is sucha low-down, dirty scoundrel, how dare any church compare God to him, ya know? Second, the religions of the world, most notably the Catholics, are really the people who are responsible for the creation of Santa Claus because St. Nicholaus, an actual 14th century Saint is who Santa is based on in the first place. There is always some kernel of truth in everything fictional in the world. Isnt it kinda ironic that it takes having to look at the story of Santa Claus to bring that fact to everyone's attention? Face it, it is no more ridiculous for people to believe in Santa Claus than it is to believe all the unjustifiable, vile crap that certain factions of society say about him.

For the sake of recapping the issues surrounding my question, let's go through this one more time. The great things about Santa Claus are the following: he promotes being kind towards and accepting your fellow human beings not just at Christmas-time but all year-round; he promotes the legitimate meaning of "the spirit of giving" which is bringing joy to others, hence his annual sleigh-ride for the children of the world; and, he also sets the example that a person can be chubby, but still bring alotta laughter and smiles to the lives of so many others. Once again, with the exception of the previously listed negative connotations I listed, which by the way are brought on or created by others, I ask once again, why is it sucha big no-no to believe in someone as kind and giving, as well as totally harmless, as Santa Claus?

Oh I know, a few folks out there actually may be wondering - does he believe in Santa Claus or what?? Quite frankly, I really dont think the issue is whether or not I believe in Santa Claus. The real point that I've tried to make by writing this piece is simply this - gather and process every single scrap of logical, rational reasoning about any given subject you possibly can before automatically disregarding and/or negating it. Seriously. I mean, with the exception of those examples where some guy in a Santa suit has sideswiped your brand new car or has robbed you or your loved ones blind, I think the chances of any of you out there stating the world has spiraled downward because of someone such as Santa Claus are pretty close to nil. And please dont say that believing in Santa Claus is something that only children do because if any of us loses (or has lost) that childlike quality for believing in something with positive faith, then what does that say about us as human beings when it comes to having dreams and setting goals? Whoever or whatever you believe in, I've always found the following guidelines as something that has always worked for me personally - if it doesnt harm you, if it doesnt harm others, and if it doesnt harm small children, animals and any other living creature on this planet, chances are it was never harmful to begin with. Think about it. Thank you for reading.
